Baby care class at the midwives of new jersey

BabyCare Class

The BabyCare Class at the Midwives of New Jersey provides parents-to-be with the most accurate and up-to-date information, supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, on caring for a newborn. We have heard from many parents that they feel overwhelmed at the thought of bringing their newborn baby home. Our BabyCare Class was created to empower both Mom and Dad with evidence-based information to help ease apprehension about caring for a newborn.

Topics Covered During the BabyCare Class

The BabyCare Class works to get parents off to a good start from birth.  They will learn about diapering and elimination patterns during the newborn period. The baby bath is reviewed and parents will also learn how to care for a newborn’s umbilical cord and circumcision.

We will discuss good ideas for your infant’s medicine cabinet, including natural and holistic remedies. For instance, instead of using a traditional diaper cream, apply coconut oil to help treat and prevent diaper rash. Using a small amount of lavender essential oil in baby’s bath water to soothe a fussy baby. This class explains how breastmilk can be used as medicine! These are just a few of the holistic treatments that we will be discussing during the class. In addition to newborn care, parents will have hands-on opportunities to learn how to safely swaddle an infant as well as various ways in which to soothe a newborn.

Another class topic is Kangaroo Care or extended skin-to-skin contact between mom or dad and baby is proven to help regulate the baby’s temperature, breathing, and improve bonding with both parents.

Parents will learn about babywearing. Babywearing has many documented benefits, including decreased fussiness, less crying, and increased bonding between mommy, daddy, and baby. It helps mom with breast milk production.

We believe it is important to be able to make informed decisions for your new baby.  We strive to provide our clients with the most current recommendations on newborn care from the medical community while honoring your decisions about parenting.
