Chiropractic 101
Understanding chiropractic begins with understanding the nervous system—the body’s central control system. The spine plays a vital role in protecting this system, but when misalignments—known as subluxations—occur, they disrupt nerve communication between the brain and body. This disruption can lead to pain and a decline in overall health. Chiropractic care focuses on correcting these misalignments, restoring proper nerve function, and promoting balance, harmony, and well-being.
Chiropractic Care for Pregnancy
Chiropractic care before, during, and after pregnancy is a safe, gentle, and highly beneficial form of healthcare. A well-aligned spine supports a healthier pregnancy, often leading to a smoother labor and delivery while promoting the best possible start for the baby.
Research shows that chiropractic adjustments can reduce discomfort and even shorten labor—by an average of six hours. Chiropractic care during pregnancy has also been known to help alleviate common concerns such as heartburn, morning sickness, lower back pain, breech positioning, constipation, and more.
The nervous system plays a crucial role in both maternal and fetal health, regulating millions of hormonal and chemical changes throughout pregnancy. Ensuring optimal nervous system function—free from subluxation-induced stress—supports a healthier pregnancy, increasing the likelihood of a smoother birth and a thriving baby.
Webster Technique
The Webster Technique is a specialized chiropractic adjustment designed to optimize pelvic function during pregnancy. It works by addressing sacral misalignment and reducing tension in the surrounding ligaments and muscles, which can contribute to intrauterine constraint.
When the pelvis is misaligned, it can create an uneven pull on the uterus, restricting space for the baby and making it difficult for the baby to move into the ideal head-down position for birth. The Webster Technique gently restores balance to the pelvis and reduces tension in the uterine ligaments, allowing the baby the best opportunity to reposition naturally.
Benefits of the Webster Technique:
-
Encourages optimal fetal positioning, reducing the likelihood of breech or posterior presentations
-
Helps alleviate conditions associated with pelvic misalignment, such as sciatica or symphysis pubis dysfunction
-
Supports a more comfortable pregnancy by reducing lower back, hip, and pelvic pain
-
May decrease the need for medical interventions such as C-sections
-
Promotes more efficient and less painful labor and delivery
This technique is widely recognized by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and is considered a safe and effective method for supporting a healthier pregnancy and birth experience.
Postpartum Chiropractic Care
Adjusting to life with a newborn can be physically and emotionally demanding, and chiropractic care can play a vital role in postpartum recovery. While childbirth is a natural process, it places immense stress on the body—particularly the spine and nervous system.
Regular chiropractic adjustments can help new mothers recover more quickly, relieve back and neck tension caused by breastfeeding and baby care, and support hormonal balance—potentially reducing the risk of postpartum depression. By maintaining spinal health, mothers can better navigate the physical and emotional challenges of early motherhood.
Chiropractic for Children
Infancy and childhood are critical times for spinal health. Birth is one of the most physically demanding experiences a body endures, and whether a baby is delivered naturally or via C-section, the process places significant pressure on the spine and nervous system. Interventions such as forceps or suction can further contribute to spinal stress.
Signs of Spinal Misalignment or Nerve Dysfunction in Children May Include:
-
Difficulty sleeping
-
Trouble breastfeeding
-
Constipation
-
Colic
-
Delays in crawling or walking
-
ADD/ADHD symptoms
-
Frequent ear infections
-
Depression
-
Prolonged illness
Many parents seek chiropractic care to address these concerns, while others choose it as a proactive approach to raising healthy children. Supporting spinal alignment from an early age lays the foundation for lifelong health and well-being.
