Are you passionate about birth, midwifery, and supporting women and families—and also someone who is organized, dependable, and enjoys being part of a busy team?
Midwives of New Jersey is seeking a full-time Midwife Assistant to join our team. This is a unique hybrid position that combines office operations and client support with hands-on support during labor and birth.
Our Midwife Assistants are an important part of the client experience throughout pregnancy—not just at the birth. They work closely with our clients, midwives, and staff in the office and then become a familiar, supportive presence when it is time to welcome their baby.
This is not solely a birth-assistant position. Approximately 75% of the role is spent working in our offices handling reception and administrative responsibilities, with additional scheduled on-call responsibilities for births. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys both sides of the role and wants to contribute to the day-to-day success of the practice.
What You’ll Do
In the Office
- Welcome clients and help create a warm, professional office environment
- Answer phones and assist with client communication
- Schedule and confirm appointments
- Work within our electronic medical record system
- Assist with client records, forms, and administrative tasks
- Collect payments and assist with front-desk responsibilities
- Maintain supplies and help keep the office organized and running efficiently
- Assist with basic clinical tasks, including phlebotomy after training
- Take initiative and help identify what needs to be done rather than waiting to be asked
At Births
- Accompany and assist the midwife during labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period
- Provide continuous physical and emotional support to clients and their partners
- Help prepare and maintain the birth environment
- Assist the midwife and clinical team as needed
- Take photos and videos during labor and birth when desired by the client
- Create a birth slideshow for the family
- Provide the calm, dependable support our clients and midwives rely on during unpredictable and sometimes long birth days
Schedule & Travel
This is a full-time hourly position requiring significant scheduling flexibility.
The typical schedule includes approximately 25–30 office hours per week, plus one 24-hour on-call shift each week. Midwife Assistants should expect to work at least two evenings per week and participate in a weekend call rotation.
Because birth is unpredictable, flexibility is an essential part of this position.
Our Midwife Assistants work across all three Midwives of New Jersey office locations and may attend births at the hospitals, birth centers, and home-birth locations we serve. Reliable transportation and the ability to travel to all locations are required.
