Midwives are present in hospitals for one reason only; consumers demand the exceptional care of midwives.
The reason that care within the Midwifery model is so effective and satisfactory is because the approach is person-focused.
The reason we (midwives) are giving the care is because of the person who emerges from our care. It is not just being “alive” that makes mothers happy they are here but being alive and WELL: well-able to live a life of love and purpose.
The mother has a life outside the medical event of this birth. The baby has an ENTIRE life yet to live. This might be forgotten if the care provider only works within the artificial world of an institution or if the provider never develops a personal relationship with the pregnant woman.
I am just another midwife in the endless line of midwives, since the beginning of time, who have been witness to sacredness of birth and stood up to protect the women and babies entrusted to me.
I care because I am a Midwife.
