We all know that “we are what we eat”. If only we remembered that saying as we make our daily food choices. After all, who really wants a mushy body that feels like macaroni and cheese or mashed potatoes? I would definitely prefer to be made out of the solid nutrition that comes from beans, nuts, green vegetables and healthy beef!
Retraining Our Taste Buds
Our culture need to re-train our taste buds to ooh and ahh about Brussel sprouts the way we do about French fries. It can be done. And the best place to begin is with the fetus in utero. Not only does a mother impact her baby’s lifelong health through her diet, but she trains his/her taste buds to accept and enjoy nutritious foods. Further, breastmilk tastes like the mom’s diet and so the baby continues to learn that complex, strong flavors are preferable to the bland, sugary flavors present in processed foods. And the baby will not get the “cocaine-like” high that comes from foods specially made to cause euphoria and thus over-consumption and addiction. Instead they get a pleasantly stimulated brain that will result in neuron growth and complexity that results in disease reisitance, normal weight and physical development and intelligence in our children.
